Graham Blackbeard
Southern Medical, Ltd.
Graham Blackbeard, has an MSc in Engineering. In 1983 and 1984 he was a Rotary Foundation Scholar at the Division of Artificial Organs at the University of Utah. He has developed and manufactured heart valves, artificial hearts, various dental implant products and orthopaedic arthroplasties.
In 1987 he established Southern Implants (Pty) Ltd. After 20 years, this South African manufacturer of Dental Implants has become a significant force in the international market by way of credible clinical data supporting an extensive and innovative product range. He has given presentations at the Academy of Osseointegration and the World Congress of Oral Implantology. He has co-authored a number of International Dental Implant Publications.
Graham has been a key in the establishment of Medical Device firms where he is a Shareholder or Director. These include Southern Implants Inc, Southern Medical (Pty) Ltd, SpinalMotion Inc, Southern Cryoscience and Southern ENT.
Malan de Villiers PhD
Southern Implants, Ltd
Malan de Villiers is the Managing Director of Southern Medical (Pty) Ltd and co-director and shareholder of other bio-medical engineering companies in the Southern Group of companies.
Malan de Villiers is an inventor of medical devices in South Africa. He holds over twenty patents or provisional patents for orthopaedic devices such as spinal discs, joints of the hand, elbow, ankle and toe, as well as patents in biological wound care, scar healing and related methods of treatment.
The early part of his career was spent as an engineering consultant, and established the firm Van Zyl and de Villiers Consulting Engineers, with offices in Manchester, London and Berlin.
He joined Southern Implants in 1987 working on dental implants. In 2000 he helped to widen the scope of the Southern Group to include companies specializing in orthopaedic devices of the spine and extremities and theatre equipment such as operating tables (Southern Medical), cryogenics of homograft heart valves (Southern Cryoscience), wound care products (Medika SA), ear nose and throat Devices (Southern ENT), biotech devices and biologics (Southern Biotech), cosmeceuticals (Southern Skin rejuvenation technologies) and ophthalmic and visco surgical devices. The group has its own manufacturing facilities, which include precision engineering (Southern Bioprecision) and ISO certified cellular expansion facilities.
Malan received his B Eng Mech and M Eng degrees cum laude at Pretoria University. His PhD in Engineering was completed in the bio-medical field at the University of Potchefstroom.
Malan is the inventor of the Kineflex Disc Technology.
Mike Ellwein

Mike joined Three Arch Partners as a Venture Partner in February 2007. Prior to Three Arch Partners, Mike spent 17 years at Medtronic where he held a number of senior management positions. Most recently he was VP and Chief Development Officer. While at Medtronic, Mike provided guidance through numerous joint ventures, mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, strategic alliances and licensing opportunities. He also provided leadership in identifying, valuing and recommending growth opportunities.
David Hovda
SpinalMotion
Mr. Hovda has nearly 20 years of experience in the medical device industry. Prior to joining SpinalMotion, he served as Vice President and Managing Director of the Spine and ENT divisions of ArthroCare, where he was responsible for the commercialization of numerous products and two business units. He also worked at Medtronic in corporate development and the corporate ventures group. Mr. Hovda served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy and completed two tours of duty. He received an M.B.A. from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration and a B.S. from Northwestern University. He is an inventor on over thirty medical device patents.
Jim Shapiro

Jim has been a general partner of Kearny Venture Partners and its predecessor funds since January 2000. He focuses on investments in the Medical Device industry. Jim currently serves on the boards of directors of CVRx, Hansen Medical [NASDAQ: HNSN], SpinalMotion, TranS1 [NASDAQ: TSON] and TriVascular2. He is a co-founder of SpinalMotion. Jim has previously served on the boards of directors of companies including Appriva (acquired by eV3 [NASDAQ: EVVV]), Eyeonics (acquired by Bausch & Lomb), Fox Hollow Technologies (acquired by ev3 [NASDAQ: EVVV]), LuMend (acquired by Johnson and Johnson [NYSE: JNJ]), TriVascular (acquired by Boston Scientific [NYSE: BSX]) and X Technologies (acquired by Guidant [NYSE: BSX]). From 1984 to 1999, Jim led Alex. Brown's healthcare investment banking practice on the West Coast, providing financing and M&A advisory services to both emerging growth and established healthcare companies. Before joining Alex. Brown, Jim was an associate at Goldman Sachs and a financial analyst at Bank of America. He holds an A.B. with laboratory research honors from Princeton University, and an M.B.A. from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
Dick Spalding

Dick is a general partner of KVP. He has been investing in and advising private companies for more than 30 years. Prior to KVP, Dick was Vice President and the first CFO at Portal Software (1997 - 1999), which grew from 10 to 120 employees during his tenure. Prior to Portal Software, he served as CFO for Fusion Medical Technologies, and was responsible for all aspects of the company's IPO. Before Fusion, Dick was the head of West Coast investment banking for Alex. Brown and Sons, which included supervision of the firm's Japan office. Dick was with Alex. Brown between 1991 and 1996, during which time he and Jim were partners. Dick joined Alex. Brown, after a fourteen-year tenure at Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison, where he co-founded the firm's Palo Alto office, which grew from 2 to over 100 lawyers. He specialized in representing biotechnology companies, including IDEC Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Gen Pro, Inc. and Xoma, Inc., among others. He was previously an observer to the board at Align Technology [NASDAQ: ALGN], and currently serves as an observer to the board at Kai Pharmaceuticals and RoxRo Pharma and is a director at Emphasys Medical and SpinalMotion. Dick is a co-founder of SpinalMotion. He holds an A.B. with honors from Harvard College, and a J.D. with honors from Columbia Law School.
Glenn Reicin

Glenn Reicin joined Skyline Ventures in October 2008 and is now a Managing Director. From 1993 to 2008, he was a Managing Director in the Research Department at Morgan Stanley, covering medical devices and supplies. He was ranked in the Institutional Investor "All-America" team from 1994 through 2008, including six years as #1. In 2008, he was ranked the #1 stock picker within the Hospital Supply/Medtech sector by the Financial Times, who also ranked him the #9 best stock picker among all publishing analysts in the U.S. He also played a leading role in bringing several companies public. Previously, Glenn was a Senior Vice President at Oppenheimer & Co., Inc., and provided research coverage in the areas of medical technology and devices. Prior to joining Oppenheimer, Glenn was a senior healthcare analyst with Fidelity Management. He also worked for Bain & Company as a management consultant, concentrating on the healthcare industry. Glenn received a BA in Economics from Brandeis University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
